About the GFB

William P. Gorman Fort Banks Elementary School

William P. Gorman Fort Banks Elementary School in Winthrop, MA, is a public school for students in pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade. The school was established in 2001, with its name honoring former principal William P. Gorman, Jr. and built on a portion of the former Fort Banks. We currently serve 500 students.
William P. Gorman, Jr. was a beloved educator and leader in the Winthrop community who served the school district for nearly 35 years. The decision to name the school after him served as a tribute to his long-standing commitment to Winthrop's youth. Sadly, he passed away in February 2004 at the age of 56 after a lengthy illness. Following his passing, his family and the community established the William P. Gorman Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund to continue his mission of supporting education and mentoring future generations in the Town of Winthrop.
